Nature's Harvest ~ A Stampin' Up! Card

Do you love Cone Flowers! I sure do! Especially after I stopped by the greenhouses at the beginning of September and bought three plants. I didn't realize how many different colors they can come in! I had a hard time choosing what colors to get! After I bought this stamp set is when I decided to get some coneflowers of my own.

Forever Blossoms ~ A Stampin' Up! Card

I'm back with another card today trying to do a technique that just did NOT want to work for me! What was the technique? Can you tell by the little snippet?

Greeting Bouquet ~ A Fun Stampers Journey Card and Live Stamp Off

I'm finally back to sharing some of my cards again.  The photo editor that I've been using died and I had to research to find a program that both edited and organized my pics.  I think I finally found one that I'm happy with and it isn't too expensive...whew.  That took longer than I thought it would!

Stay Wild in Watercolor ~ A Fun Stampers Journey Card

Today's card is a sympathy card I sent out to a friend of mine.  I don't know about anyone else, but sympathy cards are always the hardest type card for me to make.  Not that the card itself is hard, but I want to send just the right one.  I've heard a lot of people say they like to have sympathy cards on hand, but I can't do that for some reason.  I like to make something special and unique for each family.  Don't get me wrong...I don't expect that from anyone and appreciate each card I receive!

Here is a video showing how I created this card using the ATS stamp Stay Wild, the Dark Roast ink pad and Dark Roast and Gold Silk.

If you get my blog through email you'll need to go to the bottom of the email and click on "Simply Sara Stampin'".  That will bring you to my blog where you'll have access to see the video.  For some reason it doesn't show in emails!

Stampin' Up! ~ Penned & Painted with Sympathy

I don't know about anyone else, but for me making sympathy cards is the hardest when it comes to making cards.  I want to make sure the person or family I'm sending the card to knows that I truly care about them and what they're going through.  Since I am NOT a writer at all I have I hard time expressing my feelings, so I want the card to help in that area...and that's why I say sympathy cards are the hardest for me to make.

I almost forgot to take pictures of these cards , but managed to quickly snap a couple of pictures of the group.  I was taking off for a few days and needed to get them mailed out ASAP!

Thanks for looking and have a great day!

Sponged Scenery

How about some sponging today?  Today's cards are all about that.  I demo'd this card at our Red Hot Stampers meeting last night.  I actually had the ladies sponge right along with me and then we each made up our own card. These are what each of us created.  They did a great job didn't they! :)

If you'd like to give it a try I've added a picture tutorial at the end of this post. :)

Those of you who have followed my blog for awhile might think I've already made this card....you'd be kinda right! ;)  Click HERE to find out what card I'm talking about.  I was going to make this one again and demo it, but thought instead that I'd use the same colors and idea, but change it up a little.  Plus I broke my woodgrain embossing folder in half from using it so much and for some crazy reason I thought the framelits I used were retired. :(  Guess I need to keep up on that!  Either way I'm glad I tried something a little different and that I got to do a little sponging again...ok, a LOT of sponging again.  Since I had a sample card, two sponged sample pieces and I sponged one there with everyone else I ended up with four cards myself.

Here's the color combo I used on my card.  How fun is this!  My Stampin' Blog added the ability to show color combos.  I'll have to check it out a little more, but I quickly added this into my blog in no time! :)

Step by Step Picture Tutorial

I started by cutting a piece of  Whisper White card stock using the second largest die from Lots of Labels.  You can use any shape you want really.  I originally made something similar to this with a different die (there's a link to that card earlier in this post).  I added a sticky note to cover about the bottom third of the shape.  Make sure it's straight when you put it on or your horizon won't look quite right!

Starting with a sponge (I use sponges like the one shown) and Lost Lagoon ink, dab ink onto the top of your piece of card stock to create the sky.  Make sure you dab off your card stock first just in case the ink on your sponge is pretty dark.  Also make sure you do not jab your nails into the sponge when you're doing this.  It will make blobs in your sponging and you don't want that!  I dabbed straight up and down onto the card stock to get this look, starting at the top and moving my way down.  I repeat it always starting at the top and moving downward until I'm happy with how dark it is.

In this picture I've added more Lost Lagoon.  I pulled it down farther by sponging lower each time I add more ink.

Next start sponging with Hello Honey.  I worked my way up with this color, meaning I started sponging by the sticky note and moved up as I sponged.

Using a piece of thin scrap paper punch a 3/4" circle and place it where you would like the sun to be.  If you look closely you can see that I have a little area at the bottom that is over the sticky note.  I want it to look like the sun is partially below the horizon.

Using Hello Honey again dab a bunch of ink into the circle.

Yes, it will look really dark against the yellow you sponged.

To blend the sun in just repeat what you did when you first sponged on the Hello Honey.  It makes it a little darker and blends it together well.

If you want (and I did), add a little more Lost Lagoon to "blend" the colors in a little better.  I say "blend" because you don't really want to mix these two colors or you'll end up with a green sky! lol  I did it to pull the colors a little closer together.  Pull off the sticky note and this is what you'll see...

Time to put the sticky note back on.  You want to cover up what you just sponged.  I placed it over the yellow with just a smidgen of the yellow showing.  You don't want a gap between the water and they sky.  Not sure if you can see it or not, but there's a very small darker strip of yellow.  Now you need to sponge Lost Lagoon again for the water.  I rubbed it back and forth this time instead of dabbing it.

Keep adding more ink and rubbing it back and forth until it's as dark as you want it.

Pull off your sticky strip and see what you've done so far! :)

Now it's time to use Mossy Meadow to finish off your scene.  Ink up your sponge and once again dabbing the color onto your scene.  I didn't put it on super dark, just dark enough so I can see where I want to stamp my grassy area.

I stamped the wheat from the set Wetlands a few times.  To add the grass you can use any grass stamp that you have, but I just turned the wheat stamp around and used the bottom of the stamp to add in my grass everywhere.  That way I only have one stamp to clean. :)

The last thing I do is add in more green with my sponge.  This time I rubbed the sponge in small circles.  I did it a few times to cover up each of the individual pieces of grass that can be seen in the picture above.  This just softens the look of it...and then you're done! :)  I hope  you enjoyed doing some sponging.  It will definitely get your fingers dirty, but it's worth it in the end.

Sharing in Your Sorrow

Today over at Try Stampin' or Not on Tuesday we have another great sketch for you.   As I was checking the sketch out to make my card I knew I needed to make a few sympathy cards.  These are always the hardest for me to make because I want them to be special and touch each person I send them to.  I have such a hard time writing what's in my heart.  Some people are so blessed with that gift and can just write away...not me!  That's one reason I like making cards...my feeling are expressed in what I create instead of what I say.  With that being said I created the same card, just used different base colors. I used the triple layer technique and just went with the tree scene on the outside.  I did sponge on one of the cards a bit just to see what it was like...and to cover up the fact that there was just a bit of empty space where the tree image didn't stamp as close as I had hoped. lol

Here is the sketch we used.  Make sure you head over to Try Stampin' or Not on Tuesday HERE to see all the other cards the ladies created using this sketch.  Play along with us too.  We'd love to see what you create. :)

My card base color on this card is Early Espresso and I used retired cardstock Naturals White.

My card base color on this card is Soft Suede and I used retired card stock Naturals Ivory.

The card base color on my last card is Chocolate Chip and I used retired card stock Naturals White on this one too.

Best Thoughts in Watercolor

Today I a have a couple of cards to show you that are made with the same stamp but using different colors.  I've had this new stamp sitting around for over a week and I've wanted to try some water coloring and finally had a chance to do it.  As I was looking through some blog challenges I noticed that the Friday Mashup is all about water coloring with a very open sketch.  Perfect for what I wanted to do.

I made these for my daughter's best friend and her mom.  They lost their grandma and mother so I wanted to make something special for each of them.

I know...I have a lot of pics so I hope you'll bear with me while I post a few of each.  I've enjoyed trying out water coloring ever since I saw a video by Heather Telford on Splitcoast back in November or December.  She makes amazingly beautiful cards and I've sat down and made a few here and there because I enjoy it so much and because I wanted to have my images colored in.  I figured I'd use my aqua painters and ink since Stampin' Up! got rid of their Blendabilities and I couldn't color things in with them anymore.  Oh...if you'd like to check out Heather's work click HERE.  This link will show you one of her videos, then you can scroll through the rest of her blog if you'd like. :)

I forgot to add that I actually started with this card because when I think of hydrangeas these are the colors I think of.  When I wanted to do other colors for the second card I looked for pics of orange and yellow hydrangeas and they are actually out there too!  I knew there were blue, purple, green and pink, but I didn't know they come in orange and yellow too.  Guess I learned something new today. :)  Both of these cards were pretty easy to make.  I just used sponges and sponge daubers to get the colors on my stamp, but used a marker for the leaves.  I spritzed the stamp a couple of times and stamped it onto my watercolor paper.  After that I used an aqua painter to fill in the colors of the flowers and leaves.  I did use my stamp-a-ma-jig to re-stamp the image because I didn't think it was defined enough anymore.  I actually just re-spritzed my stamp instead of re-inking the whole thing again.  To get the blue background on each of the cards I just made sure the watercolor paper was wet...not too wet, but not so little wetness on it that it would dry right away.  I started going around the flower, leaves and stem and let the wet watercolor paper pull the color out away from the flower (the flower is dry when I do this!).  If I want it darker I just go back in and repeat making sure my aqua painter isn't quite as wet (but the watercolor paper still is) and get some more ink from my ink pad (in the lid).  I did tape off each of these pieces before I painted them to give them the border you can see.  I used masking tape and carefully pulled it off when the ink was dry (yes, I use my heat gun if I get sick of waiting for it to dry! lol  I also run it through my Big Shot if the paper is warped.  I just put it under an embossing folder instead of inside it.  That straightens it out in a jiffy!).

Thanks for looking and have a great day!

With Sympathy

I almost forgot to post today's card!  I love the sketch from this week's challenge at Try Stampin' on Tuesday.  At first I was going to emboss something on my card, but then decided I wanted to use this card at this month's stamp a stacks so I went with black instead.  Since I really need some sympathy cards I decided to go with that sentiment, but you could really use a lot of different stamps using the set Teeny Tiny Wishes. :)

Make sure you visit Try Stampin' on Tuesday's blog HERE to see the great cards the other designers made and to play along too. :)

Just a touch of something on the inside. :)
