The Wilderness Awaits - Red Fox

I have a masculine card for you today using another stamp from the Stampin' Up! set The Wilderness Awaits.  I made this card for my hubby's birthday this time.  First my daughter's birthday, now my husband's. :)  I really like the fox, but didn't want to just plop him on the card so I had to create the woods and mountains around and behind him. :)

I'm not so sure about the fact that he's so big in the pic, but I'm just imagining him sitting on another mountain top with the view behind him.  I have to admit I almost forgot to make my hubby a card so I had to whip this one together pretty quickly and didn't have time to play around with the scenery at all.  Sorry, Dear!

First I stamped the fox and added more grass from other various stamps I had. Then I added in the tress.  After that I tore a piece of scrap paper and sponged the shape of the mountains in (all of this done with StazOn Black).  After that I grabbed my ink pads and aqua painter and filled everything in.  I painted the sky last and masked the moon, but I don't remember the size since I have a bunch of different sized circles cut out already to grab for cards like this.

Thanks for looking and have a great day!

Holiday Home Happiness

I've been enjoying some warm weather here in Michigan...finally!  So what am I doing making Christmas cards?  Making them for 'Tis the Season's Christmas card challenge blog of course.  This week we have a fun inspiration challenge for you.  I looked at the sketch waaaay back in April and knew what I was going to do.  Then I started working on it and have to admit I did not think it was going to turn out at all.  I started with the red sleigh, brown reindeer and green trees since I embossed them.  I took one look and thought, "That is U G L Y!". lol  Glad I stuck it out because I had fun making this card and seeing it develop into something even better than I imagined it would! :)

This is the inspiration challenge.  Make sure you head over to 'Tis the Season HERE to check out the rest of the design team's cards because they are so fun!  What will this picture inspire you to make?  We'd love to see it and have you play along!

I had to stick this picture in because it shows a bit of the shimmer I spritzed onto the card after my sponging was done. :)

I hope you had as much fun looking at this card as I did creating it...just a lot less time on your part! lol

Thanks for looking and have a great day!

Lovely as a Tree ~ Sponged Scenery Tutorial

What a beautiful Saturday here in Michigan!  I'll be working outside for sure today, but I wanted to get this requested tutorial out before I do.  So if you're ready to do some reading, sponging and stamping let's get started!

The tutorial request was actually for a different card, but I made it the same way I made this one.

This is how the finished card is put together minus all the sponging and stamping.  Pretty simple, right? :)

You start by using a large sticky note and covering a part of your card stock to create your horizon.  You can determine where you want it.  If you look closely at the picture you can see where I place mine.  Just a bit below the center of the card.

To shape the mountains I took a piece of computer paper, cut it slightly bigger than my piece of card stock, then ripped out the shape of mountains.  No two will be alike, so if you don't like what you ripped out, just try again. :)  I attached this with some kind of removable adhesive so it stays in place while I'm sponging.  Don't get too crazy with the adhesive though because it will all have to come off the card stock when you sponge the sky.

These are the three colors I used to sponge everything.

I started with Sahara Sand and sponged in everything that was open space.  To get the sponged look I did on this card I did not dab or twist my sponge around.  Instead I started at the peaks of the mountains and pulled everything down.  I did it until I had color all over the open part of the card stock.  I then repeated this process again using Crumb Cake except I did not pull it all the way down to the bottom.  I want the mountains to look darker on top and lighter on the bottom.  Sorry but I forget to take a picture after I sponged Crumb Cake.

As you can see this pic is a lot darker than the previous.  I've added my third ink color, Soft Suede, and put it on just like the two previous colors except I didn't go down as far as I did with Crumb Cake.

When you pull the both pieces of the scrap paper off you'll see something like this.  Looks kind of strange, huh? lol

Now you need to take your sticky note and place it just above the horizon.  If you look closely you can see just a little strip of brown peeking out and the mountains underneath the sticky note.

You also need to take the scrap paper that you ripped your mountains out of and basically flip it upside down.  This is going to give you your mirror image, or shadow of the mountain.  Be very careful when placing the inked side against your clean side of card stock.  You don't want the ink from the other side rubbing all over it.  If you have a heat gun you might want to use it to make sure your ink is dry on the scrap piece of paper.  You'll also need to use some removable adhesive again to keep it in place when you're sponging.

I repeated all three steps that I did earlier except instead of pulling the sponge down, I pushed it up.  I have to admit I think I did the bottom a little too dark, so make sure you don't sponge as much on the bottom as you do the top.

This is what it looks like when you pull everything off again.  I think it looks funny!  Kind of like a chart of some sort. lol  Anyway if you have any adhesive on your card you'll want to remove it with an adhesive remover.  You can NOT sponge over it.  It will definitely ruin the look of your card. :(  You might not be able to see it so make sure your hands are clean and that you rub your fingers over it.  If it's not smooth there's probably some adhesive stuck there.

Next punch out a couple of circles and attach with removable adhesive.  I used 1" circles on this card.   Carefully sponge in the sky and beneath the shadows of the mountains using Sahara Sand and Crumb Cake.  I did a little bit of dabbing and just running the sponge back and forth across my paper.  It's not super dark right now, but you can do finishing details at the end. :)  Take off the circles and make sure there isn't any adhesive stuck to the card stock.

I know it looks like I jumped way ahead here, but I really didn't.  I'm just showing a few things at one time.  First I made the tops of my mountains a bit darker. I just sponged more Soft Suede on them using the ripped template I made.  I wanted more of a contrast between the actual mountains and the shadows.  Now it's time to add some trees using Soft Suede. You want to make sure you put your sticky note back on the bottom of your card and if you have a stamp-a-ma-jig use it!  Here's why I do...it lets me play around with where I want to place my trees, plus after I've done that much sponging I don't want to guess where I'm putting them.  I want to know right where they are going to go.  Also I got a blob of ink on my card stock that I couldn't get off (that's the whole adhesive issue I talked about earlier).  I was able to cover it up with the trees because I knew where I was placing them.  As you can see in the picture after I stamped my trees they don't seem to have trunks.  That's because I didn't want any part of the bottom of the stamp showing up so I didn't ink it up.

Now to add the tree trunks.  Use your Suede Marker and carefully draw them in.  My writing tip of my marker is apparently dry, so I used the fuller tip

Here they are all drawn in.  If you look closely I drew them to the top of the horizon line.  After I added the shadow of the trees I drew them below that line.  It didn't look right above it, so you'll want to draw yours to the bottom of it right away. :)

Since you've been using your stamp-a-ma-jig you have your trees already on it, so your set to put their shadows on.  But first you need to wipe of the bottoms of the tree trunks and grass because you don't wan't that showing on your card!

Ok, that's all wiped off, so before you press it onto your card stock there's a little bit more blocking that you need to do...

Strange pic huh? lol  What I've done is turned my paper around so the bottom (mountain reflection) is now at the top.  You can see that darker strip of the horizon and little brown dots on the horizon.  Those are the bottoms of your tree trunks and will show you where to line up your stamp-a-ma-jig to place the reflection on.  Flip your stamp-a-ma-jig plastic piece over so the inked side is down, line the trunks together and rub it onto your card stock.  You'll want to make sure you rub the whole thing especially by your sticky note because it won't show up if you don't press it in and rub it a bit.

Here I've rotated my card back the way it should be, I've taken off my sticky note and you can see the reflection of the trees that I added.  I also did some finishing details.  Basically I used a little Sahara Sand and Crumb Cake and sponged it to the top and bottom of my card.  I sponged a different way this time.  When I put it on the top and bottom of the card you can see there's an oval area that's lighter with a dark curved strip that's pretty pronounced on the very bottom and it little bit on the very top.  To get this look I held the left side of my card while I pulled and pushed my sponge back and forth across the bottom and just made sure I curved it when I was doing the back and forth strokes.  I hope that doesn't sound complicated because it's not! :)  I just did it until I thought it was dark enough.

Now all that's left to do is to attach your pieces of card stock together and you're done!  That wasn't too hard now was it. :)  Ok I have to admit I did one more finishing detail after I had my card put together.  I put my sticky note back on under the horizon, put a couple more sticky notes on the edges of the card (I didn't want ink all over the sides of the card) and rubbed just a bit of Soft Suede above the horizon line.  That gave me a darker strip right at the bottom of the trees and seem to soften the look of the card a little more.  You can see a bit of difference between this pic and the previous one.  Ok now I'm really done! lol

I hope you've enjoyed this and it inspires you to do a little sponging. :)
Thanks for looking and have a great day!

Sponged Wetlands

Today I have a fun card for you.  I did a sponging demo at my upline's monthly meeting on April 1 and everyone there was able to try their hand at it.  If I remember correctly there were 11 ladies and it was so fun to see each of their sponged scenes!  I had four samples made for them to look at and "copy" while I made my fifth one step by step to show them how to create the sponged scene.

The next part of the challenge is for them to take the sponged scene and make a card with it.  Well this week's sketch at Try Stampin' on Tuesday is a perfect fit for one of my sponged scenes. :)  We'll check out everyone's finished cards at the next monthly meeting.  I'm not going to be able to show this one though since I made it into a sympathy card for someone at church.  I added the sentiment in the bottom right corner, but never got a picture of it.

As you can see I also turned my card ninety degrees to make it horizontal instead of vertical. :)  I forgot to say at the beginning that this card was made based from the last anniversary card I made for my husband.  If you'd like to see that one check it out HERE.  I made this card a lot brighter because spring is here and summer is headed our way.  I made the anniversary card when fall had run its course as you can tell by the color of that card.

Thanks for looking and have a great day!

Christmas Beach

Are you ready to check out a few Christmas cards?  If you're thinking, "No way! I'm done with the cold and winter" you might want to check these cards out anyway.  This time around we have an inspiration photo from 'Tis the Season and it has a beach with Christmas ornaments on it.  That ought to make you think of warm weather! :)  I have to admit my imagination did not go wild with this photo.  I pretty much copied the idea that was in the inspiration photo...beach and bulbs. lol  That's ok.  I had a lot of fun creating these two cards and trying to figure out how to make them at least a little bit Christmasy.  At any rate I hope you enjoy the cards I made. :)

Make sure you stop by 'Tis the Season HERE and check out all the other great cards made by the designers.  Plus take a bit to play along with the challenge.  We'd love to see what you create. :)

Just a couple more pics of each card a little bit closer.  I have to tell you those ornaments were a bugger to make!  Lots of small detail work is what they were. lol

Thanks for looking and have a great day!

Faux Leather Birthday Greetings

Happy New Year, Everyone!  I've spent the day spending my Christmas money on new shelving and cabinets in my stamping area and working with my hubby to put all of them together.  I can't wait to get everything moved around! :)   Even after all of that I managed to do the Faux Stamped Leather technique that Melissa B. showed us in a Splitcoast tutorial a couple of weeks ago.  As soon as I saw the technique I knew I would be making a card for my brother's birthday using that technique, and I'm a month early with his b-day card too...amazing! lol  I was also browsing through blog challenges last night that I follow and saw that it's Color Me's... 1st anniversary....congratulations to Tara and Haley and all that have been a part of their design team!!  I've only played along with them one time since I've started following them and decided it was time to play along again.  I checked out all the options I had since we can choose any one of their color combinations over the past year and went with Color Me...subtle which was challeng # 47.  I love these colors together and thought they would go great with the faux stamped leather technique since the colors were pretty close.  Here are a few pics of the card I made...

I'm trying to show a little more detail of what I did using the stylus.  Kind of looks like the card is shimmery in this pic, doesn't?  Well it's not!  Somehow I don't think my rock climbing, hunting, body man of a brother would want a sparkly card. lol

Thanks for looking and Happy New Year!

Shimmering Snowfall

Update...I've added a few pics toward the bottom of this post with some instructions on how I made this first card. :)

Have you ever taken a walk out in the snow on a cold evening and as you're walking along you can see the snow shimmering everywhere you look when the light hits it just right?  I sure have and that's what inspired this card...well that and the fact that we've had more snow here in Michigan than we know what to do with right now! lol  We're in for a break I think, but I'm not ready for the rain and sloppy mess that we might have the next few days.  Yup, give me a good snow storm over rain and mud when it's cold out!  So this week at the Friday Mashup Avery has challenged us to do a couple of things...

Create a project using "a Metal Embellishment (Staple, Brad, Grommet etc.)".
Create a project using "Weather as your Inspiration"

think storms, Clouds, Rain, Sun, Warm Sandy Beaches.

or Mash it Up! and create a "Weather inspired project with a Metal Embellishment".

Now you can see why I made a card with snow...the weather was definitely my inspiration!  I added a few retired brads that I had stashed away to use as my metal embellishment.

Lots of great cards over at the Friday Mashup this week.  Check them out HERE and play along when you get a chance.

I'm actually adding a second card to this post also since I was kind of working on both cards at the same time.  Believe it or not I had this picture stashed away to use another time.  I didn't like how it had turned out when I originally made it, so I did a little more work on it until I was happy with what I had. :)  Wish I had taken a pic of it before I started working on it again so you could have seen the difference.  Too late now though!

I hope you've enjoyed my shimmery snow cards. :)
Thanks for looking and have a great day!
Sara

A picture tutorial for you...

Take a 3 1/4" x 4 3/8" piece of whisper white card stock and a scrap piece of paper or sticky note and cut a curve on it like the pic below.  Attache it to your card stock if you don't have a sticky note using a removable adhesive.

Use the embossing buddy, VersaMark pad and oak tree from Lovely as a Tree for the next step.  Ink up the whole tree with the VersaMark pad, and color the trunk gray with a marker after using VersaMark on the whole tree.  Stamp tree using the stamp-a-ma-jig to place it correctly.  Use white embossing powder for top and clear on the trunk.  Yup, that means you need to be careful when putting on the embossing powder.

Punch out a 1" circle on a thin piece of scrap paper and place it where you want the moon in the sky. Now sponge or use a brayer to color the sky (I used a brayer).  I started with Pool Party and brayered it all the way to the yellow piece of scrap paper.

Next sponge or brayer on Island Indigo going down about half way.

The last color you need to sponge of brayer is Night of Navy.  Go down about 1/3 of the way.

Now that you have the sky done lift off your scrap piece of paper and reposition it so you can start sponging your rolling hills. It's hard to tell in this picture, but if you look closely you can see I've sponged Pool Party about half way up the "hill".  I started by the yellow of my scrap paper and sponged my way up.

Next I sponged Island Indigo starting once again at the bottom of the hill and sponging upward.

In this picture you can see that I've finished off my first hill using Night of Navy and repeated the whole process again on the second hill.

Here's my third hill following the same step each time...sponge on Pool Party, Island Indigo and Night of Navy.

Carefully peel off your moon and if there is any sticky residue left use your adhesive remover to get it off.  You can see in this picture that I also finished off the last hill like the previous three.  I just didn't need to use the scrap piece of paper anymore.  To make it shimmery I spritzed the scene with Smooch Spritz.  If I spray it directly from that spritzer it will have bigger clumps.  For a shimmery look without the clumps I mix a bit of Smooch Spritz with 70% rubbing alcohol and spray it using one of the Stampin' Up! spritzer bottles.  Since I needed a thank you card I added that to this card. :)

Instead of using the Chevron embossing folder for this card I used the Stylish Stripes embossing folder.  I used Island Indigo card stock cut at 4"x 5 1/4".  I then layered that on Night of Navy card stock cut at 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" and scored at 4 1/4".

I hope my instructions with pictures helps anyone who wants to give this card a try!  If you have more questions don't hesitate to ask. :)
